I'm buying a used telescope - does this sound like a good deal?

Here is what 'Nick' wrote to me: "I have a 750 power Bushnell telescope.Cost me 450.00. I bought it in i 1986.I bought it to look at Haleys Comet but could never find it. Never used it since. Been sitting in my living room ever since. Will sell cheap.

AVOID.

Any telescope that is sold primarily by its 'power' is to be avoided.

Monkeyguts
don't buy it. it is garbage.
ignore claims of magnifying power.
useful magnification is usually about 50x per inch of aperature.

cosmo
That's not a very good telescope, but it's better than anything Galileo had.

How good a deal it is depends on how much you have to pay.

You can get a good pair of astronomical binoculars, new, for about $250.

Help getting telescope to work?

My brother and I were recently given a used Bushnell 450 telescope. I don't think they make them anymore and I know its a lower end telescope, but we can't get it to work. We pointed it at the moon and turned all the knobs we could but it wouldn't focus.

Bushnell is very good about having manuals for their telescopes online, even if the manuals aren't very good:

This is a pretty generic 4.

For starters, you should be focusing on something across the street or down the block to get it set up. The blurryness should be resolved by adjusting the eyepiece.

It should have come with several eye-pieces. Did you try another eye-piece? The mechanical focusing knob, does it feel like its working properly or maybe slipping? The focus mechanism inside the telescope may be disengaged is some fashion.

Bobby
Go GeoffG! You are THE telescope man!
